Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Lower Pre-Bell Friday Ahead of More Economic Reports

08:27 AM EST, 02/14/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was down 0.1% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) declined 0.1% in Friday's premarket activity ahead of more economic reports due later in the day.

US stock futures were also lower, with S&P 500 Index futures down 0.2%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.3% and Nasdaq futures retreating 0.2% before the start of regular trading.

The retail sales data and the import and export prices report, both for January, will be released at 8:30 am ET. The industrial production bulletin for January posts at 9:15 am ET, followed by the business inventories report for December at 10 am ET.

The weekly Baker Hughes domestic oil-and-gas rig count is scheduled for a 1 pm ET release. Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas President Lorie Logan is slated to speak at 3 pm ET.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was up by 0.5% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 0.5% higher.

Power Play:

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) was flat while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) was inactive. The iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was flat.

Kadant ( KAI ) stock was up 8% before the opening bell after S&P Dow Jones Indices said late Thursday the company will replace Inari Medical ( NARI ) in the S&P SmallCap 600 index on Wednesday.

Winners and Losers:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) retreated 0.4%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.1% lower, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was inactive. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) slipped by 0.3%.

GoDaddy ( GDDY ) shares were down more than 7% in recent Friday premarket activity after the company reported lower Q4 earnings that trailed FactSet analyst estimates.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was down 0.1%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was inactive. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was flat, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) gained 0.4%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) and the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) were inactive.

Magna International ( MGA ) shares were down 5% pre-bell after the company said it now expects 2026 revenue of $40.50 billion and $42.60 billion, compared with its earlier guidance of between $44 billion and $46.50 billion.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) advanced 0.03%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) was up 0.1%, while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was flat.

Moderna ( MRNA ) shares were down 5% premarket after the company reported a Q4 loss of $2.91 per diluted share, swinging from earnings of $0.55 a year earlier.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) was flat. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was down 0.1%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was up 0.6%.

NatWest Group ( NWG ) shares were down 2% pre-bell Friday after Sky News reported UK politician Nigel Farage is mulling criminal proceedings against the bank for closing his account at its Coutts unit in 2023.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) gained 0.5%.

Enbridge ( ENB ) stock was up 2% before Friday's opening bell after the company posted higher Q4 adjusted earnings.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil advanced 0.8% to $71.89 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas rose 3.5% to $3.76 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) gained 0.7%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was 3.1% higher.

Gold futures for April gained 0.2% to reach $2,950.80 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures advanced 3.6% to $33.91 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) retreated marginally by 0.01%, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 2.6% higher.
