Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Lower Pre-Bell Friday Amid Middle East Conflict

08:43 AM EDT, 06/13/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was down 0.9% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) advanced 1.2% in Friday's premarket activity, amid Israel's military strikes on Iran's nuclear and military sites.

US stock futures were also lower, with S&P 500 Index futures down 0.9%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.9%, and Nasdaq futures retreating 1% before the start of regular trading.

The University of Michigan consumer sentiment bulletin for June will be released at 10 am ET, followed by the weekly Baker Hughes domestic oil-and-gas rig count at 1 pm ET.

In premarket action, bitcoin was down by 1.8% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 1.7% lower.

Power Play:

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) retreated 0.7%, the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) fell 1.9%, while the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was inactive.

Archer Aviation ( ACHR ) stock was down 0.7% before the opening bell after the company said late Thursday it raised $850 million in a registered direct offering of 85 million shares at $10 per share.

Winners and Losers:

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was flat, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 2.8%.

Northern Oil and Gas ( NOG ) stock was up more than 4% before Friday's opening bell after the company said late Thursday it priced an upsized private offering of $175 million of 3.625% convertible senior notes due April 15, 2029, at 105.597% of the principal amount.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was down 0.2%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was inactive. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) lost 1.5%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) was 1.2% lower.

DraftKings ( DKNG ) shares were down more than 1% pre-bell after the company said it is introducing a $0.50 transaction fee on mobile and online bets placed in Illinois through DraftKings Sportsbook, starting Sept. 1.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) retreated 0.6%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) was down 0.6% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was flat. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was 1.1% lower.

Moderna ( MRNA ) stock was down more than 2% premarket after closing Thursday with a 1.4% loss. The company said Friday that the US Food and Drug Administration HAS approved Keytruda for adult patients with resectable locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma whose tumors express PD-L1.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) retreated 1%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was down 1.1%, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was inactive. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) fell 3.1%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) was 1.9% lower.

Cloudflare ( NET ) shares were down more than 1% in recent premarket activity after the company said that it priced a $1.75 billion private offering of convertible senior notes due 2030.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) fell 1.1%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was down 3.3%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 3.3% higher.

Citizens Financial Group ( CFG ) shares down more than 1% pre-bell Friday even after the company said its board increased the capacity of the company's share repurchase program to $1.5 billion.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 8.1%, reaching $73.57 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was up 1.8% to $3.56 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) was 7.8% higher, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was down 0.6%.

Gold futures for August advanced 1.3% to $3,447.20 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures gained 0.04% to $36.32 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) was 1.3% higher, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) retreated by 0.4%.
