08:06 AM EST, 12/27/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was down 0.3% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) retreated 0.2% in Friday's premarket activity, as markets turn sluggish towards the end of the year.

US stock futures were also lower, with S&P 500 Index futures down 0.3%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.4%, and Nasdaq futures losing 0.3% before the start of regular trading.

The international trade in goods, retail inventories, and wholesale inventories reports for November will be released at 8:30 am ET.

The weekly EIA domestic natural-gas supplies report is slated to be released at 10:30 am ET, while the petroleum inventories report and the weekly Baker Hughes domestic oil-and-gas rig count are scheduled for a 1 pm release.

In premarket action, bitcoin was up by 1.2% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 1.2% higher.

Power Play:

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) declined by 0.2% while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) was flat and the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was inactive.

Surf Air Mobility ( SRFM ) stock was up more than 31% before the opening bell after the company reported stock purchases worth $110,000 by certain board members.

Winners and Losers:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) retreated 0.2%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.8% lower, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) declined 0.3%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) slipped by 0.2%.

AmpliTech Group ( AMPG ) shares were up nearly 11% in recent Friday premarket activity after the company said Thursday that it has signed one or more securities purchase agreements with certain institutional investors to buy nearly 1.9 million shares of common stock at $3.10 each in a registered direct offering.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) lost 0.3%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was down 0.8%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 0.8% higher.

Walker & Dunlop ( WD ) shares were down 1.2% pre-bell Friday after the company said late Thursday it arranged a $245 million loan for the construction of a 28-story class A mixed-use tower in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) retreated 0.3%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) was down 0.4% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was inactive.

BeiGene ( BGNE ) shares were down 0.4% premarket Friday. The company said that its antibody drug Tevimbra had been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for first-line treatment of stomach-esophagus junction cancer.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was down 0.1%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was inactive. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was flat, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) lost 0.3%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) and the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) were inactive.

Ingles Markets ( IMKTA ) shares were up over 1% before the open on Friday. The company said Thursday it received a non-compliance notice from the Nasdaq stock exchange after it failed to file its annual report on time due to the effects of Hurricane Helene.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was down by 0.1%.

Seadrill ( SDRL ) stock was up 0.7% before Friday's opening bell after the company said Thursday it completed the sale of its jack-up rig, West Prospero, for $45 million.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil advanced 0.9% to $70.21 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas rose 3.4% to $3.84 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) was up 1.2%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was 2.9% higher.

Gold futures for February declined by 0.4% at $2,643.90 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures retreated 0.6% to $30.21 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) lost 0.2%, while the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was down by 0.5%.
