Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Lower Pre-Bell Thursday Amid Fading Rate Cut Hopes

08:29 AM EDT, 05/09/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was down 0.06% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 0.1% lower in Thursday's premarket activity, as traders' hopes of an early interest rate cut faded further.

US stock futures were mixed, with S&P 500 Index futures retreating 0.1%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.2% and Nasdaq futures losing 0.2% before the start of regular trading.

The weekly jobless claims report will be released at 8:30 am ET, followed by the weekly EIA domestic natural gas supplies bulletin at 10:30 am ET.

In premarket action, bitcoin was down by 1.7% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 1.6% lower.

Power Play:

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) was 0.1% down, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was inactive. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) lost 0.1%. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) and the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) were inactive.

YETI Holdings ( YETI ) traded up more than 15% after the company reported higher fiscal Q1 financial results and lifted its guidance for fiscal 2024 adjusted profit.

Winners and Losers:

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) retreated 0.03% and the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) was inactive, while the iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) was inactive.

Plug Power ( PLUG ) shares were down more than 10% before the opening bell after the company reported a wider Q1 loss and lower revenue from a year earlier.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) retreated 0.6%, and the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 0.1% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was down 0.8%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) fell by 0.4%.

SolarEdge Technologies ( SEDG ) was down nearly 10% in recent Thursday premarket activity after the company reported a Q1 non-GAAP loss late Wednesday of $1.90 per diluted share, swinging from earnings of $2.90 a year earlier.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) advanced 0.2%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) and the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) were inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) slipped 0.2%.

argenx SE (ARGX) was down nearly 5% premarket after the company reported a Q1 loss of $1.04 per share, wider than the loss of $0.52 per share a year earlier.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) retreated by 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was down 0.5%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 0.7% higher.

Brookfield (BN) was down 2.7% pre-bell Thursday after the company reported lower Q1 revenue from a year earlier.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) was up by 0.1%.

Constellation Energy ( CEG ) was up 1% before Thursday's opening bell after it reported Q1 adjusted operating earnings of $1.82 per diluted share, up from $0.78 a year earlier.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil gained 0.7% to $79.57 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas fell 1.2% to $2.16 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund (USO) advanced 0.6%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 0.8% lower.

Gold futures for June retreated 0.1% to $2,320.80 an ounce on the Comex, and silver futures were up 1.2% to $27.93 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) advanced 0.4%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 1.5% higher.
