Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Lower Pre-Bell Tuesday Amid Trade Disputes

08:40 AM EDT, 06/03/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was down 0.2% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) retreated 0.1% in Tuesday's premarket activity, amid escalating trade disputes between the US and China.

US stock futures were also lower, with S&P 500 Index futures down 0.2%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.3%, and Nasdaq futures retreating 0.1% before the start of regular trading.

The April Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey and the April factory orders bulletin will be released at 10 am ET.

Federal Reserve Chicago President Austan Goolsbee, Governor Lisa Cook, and Dallas President Lorie Logan are slated to speak on Tuesday.

In premarket action, bitcoin was up by 0.9% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 0.8% higher.

Power Play:

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) lost 0.2% while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) and the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) were inactive.

Ferguson Enterprises ( FERG ) stock was up 11% before the opening bell after the company reported higher fiscal Q3 adjusted earnings and sales.

Winners and Losers:

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was down 0.2%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) retreated 0.01%. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) lost 0.2%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) advanced 0.6%.

Dollar General ( DG ) shares were up more than 10% pre-bell after the company reported higher fiscal Q1 earnings and net sales.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was down by 0.2%.

Sitio Royalties ( STR ) stock was up more than 9% pre-bell after Viper Energy ( VNOM ) said that it will acquire Sitio in an all-equity deal valued at $4.1 billion. Viper shares were 3% higher.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) lost 0.1%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) and the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) were flat. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was inactive.

Hims & Hers Health ( HIMS ) stock was up more than 6% premarket Tuesday after the company said it plans to acquire ZAVA, a European digital health platform, to accelerate its international expansion.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) retreated 0.2%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.03% lower, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was up 0.8%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) rose 0.3%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) gained 0.1%.

WeRide ( WRD ) shares were up more than 2% in recent premarket activity after the company said it is collaborating with Renault Group to operate the autonomous minibus shuttle service during the 2025 Grand Slam tennis tournament.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) retreated 0.4%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was down 0.5%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 1% higher.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil gained 1%, reaching $63.15 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas retreated 1% to $3.69 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) was 0.4% higher, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was flat.

Gold futures for August were down 0.4% to $3,383.60 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures slipped 0.7% to $34.46 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) was 0.9% lower, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) fell 1.5%.
