Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Lower Pre-Bell Tuesday Amid Uncertainty About November Rate Cut

08:59 AM EDT, 10/22/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was down 0.4% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 0.5% lower in Tuesday's premarket activity, amid uncertainty about the US Federal Reserve interest rate cuts in November.

US stock futures were also lower, with S&P 500 Index futures down 0.4%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures declining 0.4%, and Nasdaq futures retreating 0.5% before the start of regular trading.

October's Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index will be released at 10 am ET.

Philadelphia Fed President Patrick Harker speaks at 10 am ET.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was down by 0.7% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 0.6% lower.

Power Play:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLK ) retreated 0.4%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.01% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) declined 0.5%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF ( SOXX ) fell by 0.7%.

Logitech International ( LOGI ) stock was down more than 8% in recent Tuesday premarket activity even after the company reported late Monday higher fiscal Q2 results and raised its 2025 revenue outlook.

Winners and Losers:

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) decreased by 0.1% while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) increased by 0.2% and the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was 0.4% lower.

GE Aerospace (GE) shares were down 4.8% before the opening bell even after the company reported Q3 results that topped Capital IQ analysts' estimates and raised its 2024 adjusted earnings guidance.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was down 0.2%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was inactive. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) lost 0.6%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) and the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) were inactive.

General Motors ( GM ) shares were up 2.6% pre-bell after the company reported forecast-beating Q3 adjusted earnings and revenue.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) retreated 0.1%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) was marginally lower by 0.02% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was flat. The iShares Biotechnology ETF ( IBB ) declined 0.2%.

Danaher ( DHR ) shares were up 2.2% premarket after the company reported higher fiscal Q3 revenue.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLF ) retreated 0.4%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was down 1.2%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 1.5% higher.

Invesco ( IVZ ) stock was down 2.3% pre-bell Tuesday after the company reported roughly unchanged Q3 net revenue.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) rose 2.6%, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 0.4%.

GeoPark ( GPRK ) stock was up 1.5% before Tuesday's opening bell after the company said its Argentine subsidiary received approval from Argentina's securities regulator to issue up to $500 million in debt over five years.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil advanced 1% to $71.26 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas gained 0.04% to reach $2.31 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) rose 1.2%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was down 0.7%.

Gold futures for December gained 0.3% to reach $2,745.90 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures rose 1.5% to $34.58 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) advanced 0.4%, and iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 1.7% higher.
