Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Mixed Pre-Bell Monday Ahead of Week Promising Crucial Economic Data

08:37 AM EST, 12/02/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) retreated 0.03%, while the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) advanced 0.1% in Monday's premarket activity, as markets traded mixed ahead of another week promising crucial economic data.

US stock futures were also mixed, with S&P 500 Index futures down 0.03%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.1%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.4% before the start of regular trading.

The S&P Global PMI manufacturing final for November will be released at 9:45 am ET, followed by the ISM Manufacturing Index for November at 10 am ET.

October's construction spending bulletin is slated for a 10 am ET release.

Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller speaks at 3:15 pm ET, and New York President John Williams at 4:30 pm ET.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was down by 2.2% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 2.5% lower.

Power Play:

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was up 0.1%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) gained 0.2%. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) advanced 0.6%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) increased marginally by 0.04%

Stellantis' ( STLA ) shares were down more than 7% pre-bell after the company said Sunday that its board had accepted Chief Executive Carlos Tavares' resignation.

Winners and Losers:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) retreated 0.3%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.3% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was inactive. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) slipped 0.3%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose by 0.2%.

Core Scientific ( CORZ ) shares were down nearly 4% in recent Monday premarket activity after the company said it intends to offer $500 million total principal amount of convertible senior notes due 2031 in a private offering.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) advanced 0.1%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) gained 0.02% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was up 0.3%.

NovoCure ( NVCR ) shares were up more than 25% premarket and Zai Lab ( ZLAB ) gained 1.6% after the companies said that their phase 3 trial evaluating TTFields along with gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel as a treatment for unresectable, locally advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma achieved its primary endpoint, demonstrating a "statistically significant" improvement in median overall survival.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) slipped 0.1% while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) and the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) were inactive.

Innovex International ( INVX ) stock was up 2.6% before the opening bell after the company completed the acquisition of the remaining equity stake of Downhole Well Solutions.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.1%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was flat, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 0.2% lower.

MARA Holdings ( MARA ) shares were down 2% pre-bell Monday after the company said it plans to offer $700 million of 0% convertible senior notes due 2031.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was down nearly 1%, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 0.02%.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil advanced 1.1% to $68.75 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas fell nearly 6% to $3.16 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) gained 0.5%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) fell 5.3%.

Gold futures for February were down 0.7% at $2,663.60 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures fell 0.9% to $30.83 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) retreated 0.7%, while the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 0.9% lower.
