Exchange-Traded Funds Fall as US Equities Decline After Midday

01:10 PM EDT, 03/12/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were lower. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was down 1.2%.

US equity indexes slumped in midday trading on Thursday after Iran threatened to use the war in the Middle East to jack up crude oil prices.

Energy

IShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each rose about 1.7%.

Technology

The State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) lost 1.4%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were also lower.

The State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) dropped 3%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was down 2.9%.

Financial

The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) shed 1.5%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) declined 4.5%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), climbed 4.5%.

Commodities

Crude oil rose 8.8%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) was up 7.4%. Natural gas slipped 0.3%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) fell around 1%.

Gold on Comex shed 0.8%, and the State Street SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) fell 1%. Silver was down 0.2%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) lost 0.8%.

Consumer

The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) fell fractionally. The Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) edged higher.

The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) fell 1.3%. VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) lost 0.3%, and the State Street SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) was down about 1%.

Health Care

The State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) dipped 1.2%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were in the red. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) slipped 2.2%.

Industrial

The State Street Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) fell 1.8%. Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were lower as well.

Cryptocurrency

In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) lost 0.4%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF ( BITO ) fell 0.4%, ProShares Ether ETF ( EETH ) was down 0.3%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF ( BETH ) dipped 0.5%.
