Exchange-Traded Funds Fall, US Equities Mixed After Midday Trading

12:55 PM EDT, 04/19/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds, including IWM and IVV, were trading lower. Actively-traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was down 1.8%.

US benchmark stock indexes were mixed in midday trading on Friday after technology and communication services declined and investors shrugged off Israel's retaliatory military action against Iran.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) gained 0.9% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) rose 1.1%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) was down 1.8%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) declined 1.6% while iShares PHLX Semiconductor (SOXX) fell 2.9%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) rose 0.9%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X shares (FAS) was up 2.6% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was down 2.6%.

Commodities

Crude was up 0.3%; United States Oil Fund (USO) gained 0.5%. Natural gas was down 0.4% and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) edged down 0.1%.

Gold was up 0.4% based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) rose 0.5%. Silver was up 1% and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) increased 1%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) edged up 0.1%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were higher.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) fell 0.9%; retail funds VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were mixed, with the latter edging higher.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) rose 0.3% and other funds iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were higher. Biotech ETF iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was down 0.2%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) fell 0.2% while other industrial funds iShares U.S. Industrials (IYJ), and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) were mixed, with the latter trading higher.
