Exchange-Traded Funds Higher as US Equities Rise After Midday

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV advanced. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) added 1.7%.

US equity indexes extended gains and crude oil futures fell in midday trading on Wednesday after President Donald Trump reportedly said the Iran war will end in 2 to 3 weeks.

Energy

IShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each dropped about 3.7%.

Technology

The State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) gained 2.1%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was up 2.2%, and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was 2.2% higher.

The State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) climbed 3%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was up 4%.

Financial

The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) rose 0.6%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) climbed 1.7%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), declined 1.6%.

Commodities

Crude oil fell 1.2%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) dropped 2%. Natural gas fell 2.2%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was down 2.6%.

Gold on Comex added 2.7%, and the State Street SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) advanced 2.1%. Silver was up 1.1%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) gained 0.6%.

Consumer

The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) slipped 0.6%. The Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) fell 0.5%, and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) was 0.8% lower.

The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) was up 1.3%. VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) added 0.8%, while the State Street SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) rose 0.5%.

Health Care

The State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was up 1%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) also moved higher. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) rose 1.2%.

Industrial

The State Street Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) climbed up 2.2%. Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) gained 2.3%, and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) was up 1.7%.

Cryptocurrency

In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) was up 0.9%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF ( BITO ) rose 1.7%, ProShares Ether ETF ( EETH ) climbed 2.4%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF ( BETH ) added 1.8%.
