Exchange-Traded Funds Higher, Equity Futures Mixed Pre-Bell Friday Amid Rate-Cut Hopes

08:24 AM EDT, 09/05/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was up 0.2% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 0.5% higher in Friday's premarket activity amid anticipation that soft payroll data will reinforce bets on forthcoming Fed rate cuts.

US stock futures were mixed, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.2%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.1%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.5% before the start of regular trading.

The August national employment situation bulletin from Washington is due for 8:30 am ET.

The weekly Baker Hughes domestic oil and gas rig count posts at 1 pm ET.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was up by 2.3%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 2.2% higher, Ether ETF (EETH) rose 3.1%, and Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) was 2.9% higher.

Power Play:

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was up 0.2%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) gained 0.1%. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) advanced marginally by 0.01%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) and the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) were inactive.

Lululemon Athletica ( LULU ) shares were down more than 19% pre-bell after the company overnight lowered its full-year financial outlook.

Winners and Losers:

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) retreated 0.1%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) gained 0.1%, while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was 0.04% higher.

BioNTech (BNTX) stock was up more than 7% premarket after the company and China's Duality Biologics said that their phase 3 trial evaluating trastuzumab pamirtecan in patients with a certain type of breast cancer met its primary endpoint in an interim analysis.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) retreated 0.1% while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) and the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) were inactive.

ABM Industries ( ABM ) stock was down more than 3% before the opening bell after the company reported lower fiscal Q3 adjusted earnings.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) advanced 0.6%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.6% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was inactive. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) gained 0.5%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose by 1%.

Pony AI (PONY) shares were up more than 2% in recent premarket activity after the company said it has partnered with Qatar's Mowasalat to deploy autonomous vehicles for testing on public roads in Doha, Qatar.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) retreated 0.04%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was up 0.1%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 0.3% higher.

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group ( MUFG ) shares were up more than 1% pre-bell Friday after Bloomberg reported that the company and JPMorgan Chase ( JPM ) are spearheading a roughly $38 billion debt package to finance AI-focused data centers in Texas and Wisconsin for Oracle (ORCL). JPMorgan ( JPM ) stock was marginally lower, while Oracle shares were 1% higher.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was down by 0.01%.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil was down 0.6% at $63.10 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was up 1% at $3.10 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) declined 0.6%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was 0.3% lower.

Gold futures for December declined by 0.1% to $3,604.80 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures were down 0.4% at $41.27 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) gained 0.05%, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 0.2% higher.
