Exchange-Traded Funds Higher, US Equities Mixed After Midday Trading

Broad-market exchange-traded fund IWM and IVV were higher. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) fell 0.5%.

US equity indexes traded mixed after midday Tuesday amid better-than-expected retail sales data.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) added 0.2% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) rose 0.3%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) dipped 0.8%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) added 0.9% and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) gained 0.1%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) added 0.9%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) rose 2.9% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) lost 2.9%.

Commodities

Crude was down 1.2%; United States Oil Fund (USO) lost 1.1%. Natural gas rose 1.2% and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) gained 1.1%.

Gold was up 1.5% based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) added 1.7%. Silver gained 1.5% and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was up 1.7%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) added 0.5%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) rose.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) climbed 1.1%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were higher.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) rose 1.2%; iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were higher, and iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) advanced 1.6%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) gained 2.1%, and iShares U.S. Industrials (IYJ) and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) were higher.
