Exchange-Traded Funds Higher, US Equities Mixed After Midday Trading

01:09 PM EST, 11/21/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were higher. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) rose 0.3%.

US equity indexes traded mixed after midday on Thursday as investors weighed Nvidia's ( NVDA ) Q3 results while jobless claims unexpectedly declined.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each climbed around 1%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) rose 1.1%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were higher.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) advanced 2.8%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) added 1.3%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) gained 1.3%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was up 3.9%, and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) dropped 3.8%.

Commodities

Crude oil was up 0.4%, and United States Oil Fund (USO) rose 0.7%. Natural gas rose 5.1%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was up 1.3%.

Gold added 0.7% on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) gained 0.7%. Silver fell 0.7%, while iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 0.1% lower.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) added 1.1%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were higher.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) gained 0.4%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were higher.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) moved up 0.7%, while iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were higher. IShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) gained 1.1%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) rose 1.4%, Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were higher.

The rupee closed 4 paise higher at 73.48 (provisional) against the US dollar on Friday, tracking the broad weakness of the American currency in the overseas market. At the interbank forex market, the local unit opened flat at 73.49 against the greenback. During the session, the domestic unit witnessed an intra-day high of 73.42 and a low of 73.55.

According to Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) data, the value of P-note investments in Indian markets, equity, debt and hybrid securities, was at Rs 97,744 crore in August-end compared to Rs 85,799 crore in July-end. The figure for July has been revised by the regulator from Rs 1,01,798 crore posted earlier.
