Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV rose. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) fell 0.1%.
US equity indexes were mixed in choppy midday trading Thursday as retail sales grew less than expected in December and quarterly earnings season got underway.
Energy
iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each added about 0.4%.
Technology
Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) added 0.1%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were mixed with the latter higher.
SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) was softer, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was up 1.5%.
Financial
Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) rose 0.3%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) climbed 0.8%, and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was down 0.6%.
Commodities
Crude oil was down 1%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) lost 1.5%. Natural gas fell 0.8%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) lost 1.4%.
Gold was up 1.4% on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) rose 1%. Silver rose 1%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) added 0.6%.
Consumer
Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) was up 0.4%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were up.
Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) was down 0.5%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) was flat, and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) dipped 0.2%.
Health Care
Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) rose 0.4%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were higher. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) lost 0.3%.
Industrial
Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) was up 1.2%, and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were higher.
