Exchange-Traded Funds Lower, Equity Futures Mixed Pre-Bell Thursday as Investors Turn Cautious Ahead of Data, Earnings

08:20 AM EST, 01/23/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was down 0.1% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) retreated 0.4% in Thursday's premarket activity, as investors turn cautious ahead of upcoming economic data releases and corporate earnings reports.

US stock futures were mixed, with S&P 500 Index futures down 0.1%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.2%, and Nasdaq futures retreating 0.5% before the start of regular trading.

The weekly jobless claims bulletin will be released at 8:30 am ET, followed by the weekly EIA natural-gas supplies report at 10:30 am ET. The Kansas City Fed Manufacturing Index for this month is slated for an 11 am ET release, while the weekly EIA petroleum inventories report is due at 12 pm ET.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was down by 2.7% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 2.7% lower.

Power Play:

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was up 0.1%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was inactive. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) gained 0.1%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) and the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) were inactive.

TAL Education Group ( TAL ) shares were up more than 9% pre-bell after the company reported higher fiscal Q3 non-GAAP earnings and revenue.

Winners and Losers:

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) advanced 0.2% while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) and the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) were inactive.

GE Aerospace (GE) stock was up 8% before the opening bell after the company reported higher Q4 adjusted earnings and revenue that also beat analyst estimates.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) advanced 0.5%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) was up 0.4% and the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) gained 1.3%. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was inactive.

Elevance Health ( ELV ) stock was up 5.4% premarket after the company reported higher-than-expected Q4 adjusted earnings and revenue.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) retreated 0.7%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.5% lower, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was down 0.2%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) declined 0.9%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) fell by 1.3%.

IonQ ( IONQ ) shares were down 2% in recent Thursday premarket activity, continuing the decline from the previous day's more than 7% fall. The company said it has signed an MOU with the Busan Metropolitan Government to provide quantum computing cloud services to the South Korean city.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was flat, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 0.2%.

Tamboran Resources ( TBN ) stock was down 2.3% before Thursday's opening bell, after closing the prior session with a nearly 0.1% decline. The company said it signed a non-binding MOU with Santos to evaluate a potential expansion of the Darwin LNG project.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.1%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was up 0.4%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 0.2% lower.

TriCo Bancshares ( TCBK ) shares were up 1.4% pre-bell Thursday after the company reported Q4 earnings and revenue that exceeded analysts' expectations.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil gained 0.3% to reach $75.63 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was up 0.6% at $3.98 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) advanced 0.5%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was 0.3% lower.

Gold futures for February declined 0.7% to $2,751.40 an ounce on the Comex, and silver futures retreated 2% to $30.79 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) retreated by 0.5%, while the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 1.6% lower.
