Exchange-Traded Funds Lower, Equity Futures Mixed Pre-Bell Tuesday as Traders Assess Earnings

08:29 AM EDT, 05/07/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) slipped 0.02% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 0.2% lower in Tuesday's premarket activity, as traders assess the stream of earnings.

US stock futures were mixed, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.01%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.07%, and Nasdaq futures retreating 0.2% before the start of regular trading.

The Redbook retail sales report will be released at 8:55 am ET, followed by the May IBD/TIPP Economic Optimism index at 10:00 am ET. The March consumer credit report will be released at 3 pm ET.

Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari speaks at 11:30 am ET.

In premarket action, bitcoin was up by 0.5% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 0.7% higher.

Power Play:

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) was up 0.3% while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) slipped 0.02%. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) lost 0.1%. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) was 0.3% higher.

+14% Hims & Hers Health ( HIMS ) shares traded up more than 12% after the company reported Q1 earnings late Monday of $0.05 per diluted share, swinging from a loss of $0.05 a year earlier.

Winners and Losers:

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) advanced 0.2%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) was flat while the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was also inactive.

Helius Medical Technologies ( HSDT ) shares fell 15% premarket after pricing a $6.4 million public offering of common shares and warrants.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was up 0.5%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 0.7% lower.

+9% UBS (UBS) was up 9% pre-bell Tuesday after the company reported higher Q1 financial results compared with the previous year.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) retreated 0.2%, while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) and the iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) were inactive.

The GEO Group ( GEO ) lost nearly 5% before the opening bell after the company reported lower Q1 adjusted earnings and revenue than the same period a year earlier.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) slipped 0.03%, and the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 0.1% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was inactive. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) was flat, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) fell by 0.1%.

Zeta Global Holdings ( ZETA ) was up nearly 18% in recent Tuesday premarket activity after the company reported late Monday a narrower Q1 net loss from a year earlier and higher revenue.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) was up by 0.1%.

Delek Logistics Partners, LP ( DKL ) was up 2.8% before Tuesday's opening bell after the company reported higher year-over-year Q1 revenue.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil lost 0.3% to reach $78.25 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas rose nearly 1% to $2.22 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund (USO) was down 0.5%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 0.8% higher.

Gold futures for April retreated 0.4% to $2,322.30 an ounce on the Comex, and silver futures were also down by 0.4% to $27.51 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) were 0.6% lower, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) lost 0.4%.
