Exchange-Traded Funds Lower, US Equities Mixed After Midday Trading

12:51 PM EDT, 06/20/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds, including IWM and IVV, were lower. The actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was down 0.7%.

US equity indexes traded mixed while most government bond yields rose after weekly jobless claims and housing starts for May declined.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) rose 1.9% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) rose 2.1%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) fell 0.9%, and iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) fell 1.8%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) dropped 1.9%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) rose 0.1%, erasing earlier losses. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X shares (FAS) rose 0.4% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) dropped 0.5%.

Commodities

Crude rose 0.3% and United States Oil Fund (USO) gained 0.4%. Natural gas fell 4.4%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) slumped 4.1%.

Gold was 1% higher based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) rose 1.1%. Silver was up 3.9% and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) added 3.7%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) eased 0.2%, and Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were lower.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) was 0.3% lower; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and the SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were lower.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) rose 0.2% and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were higher. Biotech ETF iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was up 0.7%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) dropped 0.1%, iShares U.S. Industrials (IYJ) was up 0.1% and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) lost 0.1%.
