Exchange-Traded Funds Lower, US Equities Mixed After Midday Trading

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were lower. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) gained 0.1%.

US equity indexes traded mixed midday Wednesday as investors weighed housing market data amid a surge in gold prices to a fresh record high intraday.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) both lost about 1.8%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) rose 0.3%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) added 0.3% while iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) gained 0.2%.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) fell marginally and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) added 0.6%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) fell 0.7%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) dropped 2.1% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) rose 2.1%.

Commodities

Crude oil was down 2.5%; United States Oil Fund (USO) fell 2.6%. Natural gas rose 1.2%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) edged up 0.4%.

Gold gained 0.1% on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) fell 0.5%. Silver was 1% lower, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) fell 1.9%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) dropped 0.1%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were lower.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) fell 0.6%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were lower.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was down 0.7%; iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were lower. iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) declined 0.8%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) shed 0.2%. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were lower.
