Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were lower Thursday. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) edged down 0.1%.
US equity indexes were mixed in choppy midday trading following a surprise slowdown in private jobs growth in August.
Energy
iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) dropped 0.4% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) fell 0.5%.
Technology
Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) shed 0.3%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were also softer.
SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) was down 0.9%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was 0.3% lower.
Financial
Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) dropped 1.3%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) lost 3.8% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) climbed 4%.
Commodities
Crude was down 0.2%; United States Oil Fund (USO) gained 0.9%. Natural gas rose 5.8%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) climbed 5.9%.
Gold added 0.5% based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) was 0.6% higher. Silver was 1.9% higher, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) advanced 2.2%.
Consumer
Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) fell 0.5%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were also lower.
Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) added 0.8%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were lower.
Health Care
Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) shed 1.5%; iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were also lower. iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) dipped 0.7%.
Industrial
Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) fell 1.5%. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were also in the red.
