Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were mixed, with the latter edging lower. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) dipped 0.5%.
US benchmark stock indexes were down in midday trading Tuesday, with technology stocks leading the decliners ahead of the New Year break.
Energy
iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) rose 1% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) gained 1.1%.
Technology
Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) shed 0.6%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were also in the red.
SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) was down 0.5%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) dropped 0.4%.
Financial
Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) edged down 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) shed 0.7%, and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) added 0.7%.
Commodities
Crude oil gained 1.1%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) was 1% higher. Natural gas tumbled 5.4%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) slumped 5.3%.
Gold advanced 0.8% on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) added 0.6%. Silver retreated 0.6% while iShares Silver Trust (SLV) slipped 0.7%.
Consumer
Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) dipped 0.2%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) edged down 0.2%, while iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) was narrowly lower.
Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) dropped 0.6%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) steadied, while SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) lost 0.3%.
Health Care
Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) shed 0.3%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were also down. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) lost 0.2%.
Industrial
Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) edged down 0.3%, Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were also weaker.
