Exchange-Traded Funds Mixed, US Equities Edge Up After Midday Trading

Broad-market exchange-traded funds were mixed, with IWM higher and IVV lower. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) lost 0.1%.

US equity indexes edged up in choppy midday trading Wednesday ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy announcement later in the afternoon.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) rose 0.2%, and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) added 0.3%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) fell 0.4%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was up while iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) dipped 0.2%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was 0.3% down.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) lost 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was 0.6% lower and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 0.5% higher.

Commodities

Crude was down 1.1%; United States Oil Fund (USO) lost 0.7%. Natural gas fell 1.6%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) dropped 1.2%.

Gold edged up 0.2% on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) rose 0.2%. Silver was 0.7% lower, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) shed 0.8%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) was up 0.1%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were higher.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) rose 0.2%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were higher.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was up 0.2%; iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were higher. iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) fell 0.2%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) rose 0.2%. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were mixed, with the former trading higher.
