US equity indexes fell in midday trading on Thursday, clawing back losses from earlier in the session amid reports of diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint for a fifth of global crude oil flows.
Energy
IShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each rose about 0.3%.
Technology
The State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) gained 0.2%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was fractionally lower, and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was 0.3% higher.
The State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) rose 0.4%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was down 0.5%.
Financial
The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) added 0.3%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) climbed 1%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), declined 0.7%.
Commodities
Crude oil rose 10.9%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) advanced 10.6%. Natural gas fell 0.4%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was down 0.4%.
Gold on Comex lost 2.5%, and the State Street SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) dipped 2.1%. Silver was down 4.9%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) lost 3.7%.
Consumer
The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) added 0.3%. The Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) rose 0.2%, and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) was 0.3% higher.
The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) slipped 1.4%. VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) fell 0.2%, while the State Street SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) was down 0.4%.
Health Care
The State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was down 0.7%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) also moved lower. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) fell 1%.
Industrial
The State Street Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) dipped 0.4%. Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) lost 0.4%, and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) was down 0.5%.

In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) shed 1.5%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF ( BITO ) fell 1.4%, ProShares Ether ETF ( EETH ) declined 3.6%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF ( BETH ) shed 2.2%.
