Exchange-Traded Funds Rise While US Equities Mixed After Midday Trading

01:01 PM EDT, 05/20/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds, including IWM and IVV, were trading higher. Actively-traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was up 0.8%.

US equity indexes traded mixed, while government bond yields rose after midday Monday as investors weighed remarks from top Federal Reserve officials on the path ahead for monetary policy.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) fell 0.5% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) edged down 0.5%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) was up 1.1%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were higher.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) rose 1% while iShares PHLX Semiconductor (SOXX) increased 2.7%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) contracted 0.6%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X shares (FAS) was down 1.6% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was up 1.6%.

Commodities

Crude was down 0.6%; United States Oil Fund (USO) fell 0.5%. Natural gas was up 3.6% and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) increased 2.6%.

Gold was up 0.5% based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) rose 0.3%. Silver was up 2.8% and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) gained 1.4%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) fell 0.5%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were lower.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) contracted 0.6%; retail funds VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were lower.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) fell 0.1% and other funds iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were lower. Biotech ETF iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was up 0.6%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) gained 0.4%, while other industrial funds iShares US Industrials (IYJ), and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) were mixed, with IYJ lower.
