Exchange-Traded Funds, US Equities Decline While Treasury Yields Jump

12:51 PM EDT, 03/15/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds, including IWM and IVV, were trading lower. Actively-traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was down 1.2%.

US benchmark stock indexes fell, led by technology, as government bond yields traded at their highest levels this month following this week's hotter-than-expected inflation data and ahead of the Federal Reserve's updated economic projections.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) gained 0.2% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) edged up 0.3%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) was down 1.6%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) fell 0.7% while iShares PHLX Semiconductor (SOXX) slid 0.6%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) was fractionally lower. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X shares (FAS) was down 0.6% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was up 0.5%.

Commodities

Crude was down 0.1%; United States Oil Fund (USO) rose 0.1%. Natural gas was down 1.7% and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) declined 1.7%.

Gold was down 0.1% based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) fell 0.1%. Silver was up 2.1% and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) rose 2.3%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) fell 0.2%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were lower.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) decreased 1.2%; retail funds VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were mixed, with the latter trading higher.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) fell 0.5% and other funds iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were lower. Biotech ETF iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was fractionally higher.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) was down 0.1% while other industrial funds iShares U.S. Industrials (IYJ), and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) were higher.
