Exchange-Traded Funds, US Equities Fall After Midday

01:12 PM EDT, 08/20/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV declined. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) slid 1%.

US equity indexes fell in midday trading on Wednesday amid a broad sell-off in tech stocks.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) rose 0.9% and the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) added 1%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) lost 0.9%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) also moved lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) fell 1.3%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was down 1.3%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) gained 0.3%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) rose 1%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), fell 0.7%.

Commodities

Crude oil added 1.5%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) was up 1.5%. Natural gas fell 0.7%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) lost 0.8%.

Gold rose 0.9% on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) climbed 0.9%. Silver added 1.2%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was up 1.3%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) rose 0.6%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and the iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) also advanced.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) lost 1.1%, VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) rose 0.1%, and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) slipped 0.6%.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) rose 0.4%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) also advanced. iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) added 0.2%.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) shed 0.2%. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were lower.

Cryptocurrency

In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) added 0.4%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF ( BITO ) rose 0.8%, ProShares Ether ETF ( EETH ) advanced 4%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF ( BETH ) was down 0.2%.
