Exchange-Traded Funds, US Equities Fall After Midday Friday

01:13 PM EDT, 08/29/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV declined. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was down 1.1%.

US equity indexes declined as investors assessed the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation data amid rising short- and medium-term inflation expectations.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each added about 0.5%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) fell 1.5%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were also lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) lost 1.7%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was down 2.5%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) added 0.5%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) rose 1.1%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), slipped 1%.

Commodities

Crude oil fell 0.9%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) shed 0.6%. Natural gas climbed 1.1%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was up 0.8%.

Gold on Comex rose 1.1%, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) added 0.7%. Silver gained 2.4%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 1.9% up.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) added 0.3%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and the iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were also higher.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) fell 1.1%, VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) declined as well.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) added 0.5%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) edged higher. iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) fell 0.1%.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) was down 1%. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were lower.

Cryptocurrency

In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) dipped 3%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF ( BITO ) was down 3.1%, ProShares Ether ETF ( EETH ) lost 2.9%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF ( BETH ) fell 2.9%.
