Exchange-Traded Funds, US Equities Fall After Midday Trading

12:53 PM EDT, 07/18/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded fund IWM and IVV were lower. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) fell 0.5%.

US equity indexes fell after midday Thursday as quarterly earnings rolled in and weekly jobless claims increased more than forecast.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) roughly 1% each.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) dipped 0.5%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) lost 0.5% and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) dropped 0.2%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) fell 0.5%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) dropped 1.8% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) added 1.8%.

Commodities

Crude was up 0.2%; United States Oil Fund (USO) added 0.3%. Natural gas rose 4.1% and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) added 4%.

Gold was up 0.02% based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) was fractionally lower. Silver lost 0.4% and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) dipped 0.9%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) eased less than 0.1%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were mixed with the latter trading higher.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) fell 0.3%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were lower.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) dipped 1.4%; iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were lower. iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) fell 0.6%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) fell 0.1%. iShares U.S. Industrials (IYJ) and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) were lower.
