Exchange-Traded Funds, US Equities Lower After Midday Friday

01:10 PM EDT, 05/09/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were lower. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was down 0.2%.

US equity indexes traded lower after midday Friday before US-China trade negotiations this weekend in Switzerland.

Energy

IShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) were each up about 0.7%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) fell 0.4%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) dipped 0.3%, and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was 0.3% lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) advanced 0.6%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) gained 0.6%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) eased 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) fell 0.6%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), climbed 0.8%.

Commodities

Crude oil was 1.3% higher, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) gained 1.3%. Natural gas rose 4.9%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was up 4.8%.

Gold added 1.2% on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) rose 1.1%. Silver gained 1%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) climbed 1.1%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) was down 0.5%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and the iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) also declined.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) added 0.2%; VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was down 0.8%, while SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) fell 1.3%.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) lost 0.3%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were also lower. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) fell 1.4%.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) lost 0.3%. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were also in the red.
