Exchange-Traded Funds, US Equities Lower After Midday Trading

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were lower. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) fell 0.5%.

US equity indexes fell in midday trading Thursday as volatility continued to rise ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's remarks on Friday at the Jackson Hole Fed Symposium.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each rose about 0.6%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) dropped 0.9%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were declining.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) was down 1.0%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was 1.1% lower.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) was up 0.5%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) rose 1.3% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) fell 1.2%.

Commodities

Crude rose 2.1%; United States Oil Fund (USO) was up 2%. Natural gas dropped 5.8% and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) retreated 5.9%.

Gold was down 1% based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) fell 1.1%. Silver was 1.1% lower and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 1.3% lower.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) lost 0.1%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were lower.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) was down 0.7%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were lower.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was 0.1% softer; iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were softer. iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) lost 0.5%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) was up 0.2%. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were higher.
