Here is how Sensex performed on Budget Day in the past 10 years

SUMMARY

On the day of the Union Budget presentation, in the last 10 years, the Indian equity markets' response remained mixed. The observations very much reflected in the benchmark indices' performance. The BSE Sensex has fallen by 0.16 to 2.43 percent six times and has risen by 0.48 to 1.76 percent in the remaining four days of presentation of Union Budget in the last 10 years. Here is how the market fared in the last 10 Budget days.

In Calendar year 2011, the Union Budget was presented by then finance minister Pranab Mukherjee. The Sensex gave a positive return of 0.69 percent on the Budget day.

In Calendar year 2012, Mukherjee presented his last Budget under the UPA government. The benchmark Sensex ended 1.19 percent lower on that day.

P Chidambaram presented the Union Budget on February 28, 2013. The Sensex tanked 1.52 percent that day.

Chidambaram also presented Union Budget in 2014 on February 17. The Sensex settled 0.28 percent lower and registered the third consecutive Budget day loss.

In 2015, it was the turn of finance minister Arun Jaitley to present the Union Budget after PM Narendra Modi-led NDA government came to power. The Sensex ended 0.48 percent higher that day.

The Sensex lost 0.66 percent after Jaitley presented the Union Budget on February 29, 2016.

The day of the presentation of the Union Budget was preponed in 2017 and Jaitley presented the Budget on February 1. Sensex gained 1.76 percent, the highest Budget day gain between 2010 and 2019.

In 2018, Jaitley presented his last Budget as finance minister of India. The Sensex closed marginally lower with a loss of 0.16 percent that day.

In 2019, the Union Budget was presented by acting finance minister Piyush Goyal on February 1. The Sensex rose 0.59 percent on the Budget day.

After the BJP government returned to power in May 2019, Nirmala Sitharaman became the first full-time female finance minister in India. She brought the budget papers in a 'Bahi-Khata' ditching the traditional red briefcase. The Sensex ended with a massive loss of 987.96 points, or 2.43 percent that day.
