The income-tax department on Monday released a new set of data on direct tax collections. The data shows that overall, Rs 10.02 lakh worth of direct tax was collected during 2017-18, an increase of 18 percent over last fiscal.

Whereas, the collection grew by 57 percent over the period of five years since 2013-14 with Mizoram recording the highest collection. The state's collection increased by 328 percent to Rs 76.27 crore. Mizoram was followed by Nagaland, which saw a 286 percent growth in the collection, at Rs 135.39 crore.
While, most of the staggering rise growth can be attributed to the low-base effect, many other states recorded a massive growth even with a higher base.
For instance, Maharashtra, which has the highest share of 38.2 percent in the overall direct-tax collection, witnessed a 67.4 percent growth. The state collected Rs 3.84 lakh crore of direct taxes during 2017-18.
Similarly, the collection in Karnataka increased by 69.3 percent to Rs 1.01 lakh crore in 2017-18.
Other states with the growth rate of direct taxes, higher than the overall growth rate, are Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, etc.
Delhi, which has the second-highest share of 14 percent in the overall direct tax collection in India, grew by 55 percent since 2013-14. The collection in other states like Jharkhand, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand also grew more than 50 percent.
Assam, Goa, Sikkim and Odisha recorded a sub-20 percent growth. However, the collections in Jammu & Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh are down by almost 10 percent from 2013-14 level.
