Afghanistan and Syria followed India at second and third place. While, the USA is ranked tenth, the only western nation on the list.

The survey contacted 548 experts focused on women issues including aid and development professionals, academics, health workers, policymakers, non-governmental organisation (NGO) workers, journalists etc.

The study analysed countries on six significant parameters – healthcare, discrimination, cultural traditions, sexual violence, non-sexual violence and human trafficking.

India was ranked as the most dangerous country in the world in following parameters - human trafficking, sexual violence and cultural tradition.

The report highlights the practices followed in India such as acid attacks, female genital mutilation, child marriage, forced marriage etc. as the primary factor behind ranking the country so high in the list.

The poll was a repeat of a survey conducted by Thompson Reuters Foundation in 2011 that had found Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, India and Somalia as the most dangerous countries for women.
