Job Openings, Factory Orders Increase Weigh on Exchange-Traded Funds, US Equities

12:53 PM EDT, 04/02/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds, including IWM and IVV, were trading lower. Actively-traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was down 1.2%.

US benchmark stock indexes slumped by Tuesday afternoon as most government bond yields rose after a surprise increase in job openings and new orders for factory goods advanced more than forecast.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) rose 0.5% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) gained 0.6%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) was down 1.3%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) declined 2.6% while iShares PHLX Semiconductor (SOXX) fell 2.4%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) contracted 0.5%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X shares (FAS) was down 1.3% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was up 1.1%.

Commodities

Crude was up 1.2%; United States Oil Fund (USO) rose 0.8%. Natural gas was up 1.8% and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) increased 1.9%.

Gold was up 0.8% based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) edged up 0.6%. Silver was up 3.2% and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) rose 3.2%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) fell 0.5%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were lower.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) decreased 1.5%; retail funds VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were lower.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) fell 1.9% and other funds iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were lower. Biotech ETF iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was down 1.9%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) slid 0.3% while other industrial funds iShares U.S. Industrials (IYJ), and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) were lower.
