Key Inflation Data Leave Exchange-Traded Funds Lower, US Equities Mixed

01:01 PM EDT, 05/31/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Broad-market exchange-traded funds, including IWM and IVV, were lower at midday Friday, with the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) down 1.5%.

US equity indexes traded mixed as growth sectors such as technology slumped after the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge for April showed price pressures in line with market expectations.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) rose 1.2% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) gained 1.4%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) was down 1.8%, and iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were both nearly 2% lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) lost 2.1% while iShares PHLX Semiconductor (SOXX) fell 3.1%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) gained 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X shares (FAS) was up 0.3% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was down 0.3%.

Commodities

Crude was down 0.6%; United States Oil Fund (USO) fell 0.7%. Natural gas was down 0.6% and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) declined 0.3%.

Gold was 0.5% lower based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) lost 0.3%. Silver was down 3.2% and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) slid 2.3%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) gained 0.1%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were higher.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) fell 0.8%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) was down 0.6% and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) climbed 0.9%.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) rose 0.6% and other funds iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were higher. Biotech ETF iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was down 0.1%.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) lost 0.3% and other industrial funds iShares U.S. Industrials (IYJ) and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) were lower as well.
