Indian shares ended with gains for the second consecutive seesion amid optimism that the governemnt may roll-back hike in FPI surcharge tax and announce more market-friendly measures to boost liquidity in the system to prop up demand. The Sensex was up 254.55 points, or 0.68 percent, to settle at 37,582 at close, while the NSE Nifty50 was up 77.20 points, or 0.70 percent, at 11,109.70. For the week, both frontline indices ended over a percent higher. The Nifty MidCap index gained almost a percent, while the banking gauge surged 0.96 percent. IT, metal, PSU bank and pharma indices witnessed selling pressure among sectoral gauges, while buying was seen in the auto, FMCG and energy sectors. Indiabulls Housing, Eicher Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Finserv and Titan Company were among major gainers on the Nifty, while losers were Yes Bank, Cipla, Hindalco Industries, Tech Mahindra and Coal India.

-Benchmark indices held on to gains, led by rise in shares of heavyweights Housing Development Finance Corp, HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries and Larsen & Toubro.

-Investors are optimistic about the government rolling back the hike in income tax surcharge announced on foreign portfolio investors.

-At 2.02 pm, the Nifty was at 11157, up 124 points, or 1.12 percent from the previous close. The Sensex was at 37740, up 417 points or 1.12 percent.

-Page Industries, the Indian franchise and manufacturer of Jockey innerwear, slumped as much as 5.58 percent to a 52-week low of Rs 17,744 on Friday after the company's net profit dropped 11 percent in the June-quarter.

-Shares of NBCC (India) plunged as much as 13.3 percent to Rs 34.35 on Friday after the state-owned engineering firm reported a 39 percent decline in its June-quarter consolidated net profit, missing estimates.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will cut interest rates again at its October meeting, making it the fifth in a row, according to economists in a Reuters poll who said the central bank's decision to ease by 35 basis points on Wednesday was right. While a survey taken ahead of August's meeting showed a 25 basis points rate cut was a done deal, the RBI was expected to keep rates unchanged for the rest of this year. However, a more recent Reuters poll, conducted Aug. 7-8, predicted the RBI would ease its benchmark lending rate by 25 basis points to 5.15 percent in October. If it does cut again as forecast it would be a repeat of a cutting spree last seen in 2000-01. READ MORE
