Market starts January series with strong gains as financials rise, Nifty ends above 10,850

Indian shares started the January series on a strong note, ending higher for a third straight session on Friday, largely led by financials. At the close of market hours, the Sensex was up 269.44 points or 0.75% at 36076.72, while the Nifty was higher by 80.10 points or 0.74% at 10859.90.

Broader markets outperformed with both Nifty and BSE MidCap index settling higher by 0.9 percent. Sun Pharma, Vedanta, and Titan were the top gainers, while Coal India, TCS, and Bharti Infratel lost the most.

On a weekly basis, both benchmark indices ended nearly a percent up. Broader market indices also surged with the MidCap Index up by a percent. Nifty Bank also gained a percent. Metal, IT, FMCG, PSU Ban, Pharma were among major gainers, while Auto dipped.

Market maintains gains as financials rise, Nifty eyes 10,900

The Indian market maintained gains on Friday with the BSE Sensex trading more than 300 points higher and the NSE Nifty50 aiming for 10,900 mark around noon.

At 12.05 pm, the Sensex was up by nearly 311 points, or 0.87 percent, trading at 36,118. The Nifty surged by over 93 points, or 0.87 percent, to 10,873.

Broader markets also joined the rally with the Nifty MidCap gaining 0.81 percent and the BSE MidCap rising 0.72 percent.

All 43 sectors advanced with Nifty Media leading with 1.72 percent gains. Nifty Pharma, BSE Consumer Durables, Nifty PSU Banks and BSE Finance were other major sectoral gainers.

Sun Pharma and IOC jumped more than 3 percent while ZEEL, UPL, Yes Bank, HDFC, Tata Motors and Vedanta gained between 1.5 and 3 percent. HDFC, Reliance, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, L&T, TCS and SBI shares contributed maximum to index gains with HDFC alone contributing 61 points to Sensex gains.

Among the declining stocks, Coal India slipped over 3 percent, Asian Paints fell 0.35 percent. Bajaj Auto and ONGC were marginally down.

The rupee traded at 69.97 per US dollar at 12.15 pm.

In Asia, Japan's Nikkei fell 0.33 percent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.13 percent, Kospi gained 0.67 percent and Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.15 percent at 12.16 pm IST.
