Markets at close: How the major indices and stocks fared on Wednesday

Indian shares settled Wednesday's trading session with strong gains on sustained buying across sectors as trade sentiment improved on possible government relief measures for sectors impacted by the coronavirus outbreak.

Here's a quick recap of how top market indices and stocks fared on Wednesday

Frontline indices

Sensex: The Sensex settled 428 points higher, or 1.05 percent, to close Wednesday's trade at 41,323. So far this year, the 30-share benchmark BSE index has gained 0.17 percent, adding 69 points.

Nifty50: The Nifty50 gained 133 points, or 1.11 percent, to settle at 12,126. So far this year, the broader NSE index has been negative by over 42 points, or 0.35 percent.

Key stocks

Reliance Industries: The oil-telecom-retail conglomerates' shares ended 2.6 percent higher, quoting at Rs 1,504.20 on NSE.

Tata Consultancy Services: The IT major settled 0.93 percent lower, closing at Rs 2,194.60 per share on NSE.

HDFC Bank: The private sector lenders' shares settled 1.11 percent higher in trade today, quoting at Rs 1,227 on NSE.

Hindustan Unilever: The FMCG major's stock closed at Rs 2,294 per share, up 2.74 percent at close on NSE.

HDFC: The NBFC stock settled at Rs 2,377, up 2.32 percent.

Major sectors

Nifty Bank: The banking gauge settled 0.90 percent higher at 30,838, up 275 points at close. So far this year, Nifty Bank has lost over 4 percent.

Nifty IT: The IT index gained a modest 0.14 percent to settle at 16,772. So far this year, it has gained over 7 percent.

Nifty FMCG: The consumer goods gauge settled 1.56 percent higher at 30,835. So far this year, Nifty FMCG has gained 2.37 percent.

Nifty Auto: The index ended 0.06 percent lower to settle at 7,687. So far this year, it has corrected by 7 percent.

Nifty Metal: The metal index added 1.37 percent to settle at 2,591. So far this year, the index has lost 7.51 percent.
