Sep 21, 2025 3:28 AM

03:37 PM EDT, 09/19/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The number of oil rigs in the US rose by two in the week through Friday as crude prices fell for the third day in a row.

The count for oil increased to 418 rigs from the previous week's 416, according to data from energy services company Baker Hughes ( BKR ) . The tally for gas was unchanged at 118, while miscellaneous rigs added one.

The US had 488 oil, 96 gas and four miscellaneous rigs in operation a year earlier. Among US states, Colorado and Wyoming added two rigs each on a weekly basis, while top producer Texas lost a similar number of rigs.

Across North America, the oil and gas rig count grew by six to 731, with Canada adding three to bring its tally to 189, the data showed.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil was down 1.4% at $62.67 a barrel in Friday afternoon trade, while Brent fell 1.2% to $66.65 a barrel. Both were on course for the third decline in as many days.

On Thursday, US President Donald Trump reportedly said that Russia's war in Ukraine would end if oil prices fall.

"On the other hand, upside risks for oil continue following the recent attacks on Russian energy infrastructure by Ukraine," ING Head of Commodities Strategy Warren Patterson said in a report published Friday.

WTI is down 0.1% so far on the week, while Brent was lower by 0.5%.

The US Federal Reserve on Wednesday lowered its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points, while signaling further cuts later this year amid increased downside risks to employment.
