Petrol and diesel prices rose 14 paise and 15-16 paise, respectively on Friday across the four metro cities — Mumbai, Chennai, New Delhi and Kolkata.
Petrol prices have risen about 83 paise while diesel prices have increased by 80 paise over the past one week.
Petrol price in Mumbai stood at Rs 76.93 a litre, while diesel was at Rs 69.63 per litre on Friday.
According to the Indian Oil Corp data, in New Delhi, petrol costs Rs 71.29 per litre and diesel costs Rs 66.48 per litre.
In Kolkata and Chennai, petrol stood at Rs 73.39 per litre and Rs 74.02 per litre while diesel stood at Rs 68.27 per litre and Rs 70.25 a litre, respectively.
Transport fuel rates were hiked sharply on January 13 as global crude oil rates continued to climb handsomely following the implementation of output cuts by global oil producers from January 1.
US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures were at $56.85 per barrel at 0010 GMT, down 11 cents, or 0.2 percent, from their last settlement. International Brent crude futures had yet to trade.
As per the country's dynamic pricing mechanism, the domestic fuel prices depend upon international fuel prices on a 15-day average and the value of the rupee.
India's fuel demand rose 6.4 percent in January compared with the same month last year. Consumption of fuel, a proxy for oil demand, totalled 18.34 million tonnes, data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the oil ministry showed.
