Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Advance in Afternoon Trading

01:57 PM EDT, 09/16/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks were rising Tuesday afternoon, with the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) up 0.3% and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) adding 0.4%.

Redbook US same-store sales rose by 6.3% from a year earlier in the week ended Sept. 13 after a 6.6% year-over-year increase in the previous week.

In corporate news, Webtoon Entertainment ( WBTN ) shares surged 36% after the company and Walt Disney ( DIS ) announced Monday the signing of a non-binding term sheet to develop a digital comics platform. The companies also said they signed a non-binding term sheet for Disney ( DIS ) to buy a 2% stake in Webtoon. Disney ( DIS ) shares shed 0.6%.

President Donald Trump said Monday he filed a $15 billion defamation and libel lawsuit against the New York Times ( NYT ) , alleging the newspaper made false allegations against him, his family, his business, and the US. Shares of the New York Times ( NYT ) were down 1.9%.

Ford (F) will slash up to 1,000 jobs at its electric vehicle facility in Cologne, Germany, due to weak market demand, the automaker told MT Newswires. Ford shares fell 1.4%.
