Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Ease in Late Afternoon Trading

03:43 PM EST, 12/09/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks were softer in late Monday afternoon trading with the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) fractionally lower and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) shedding 0.5%.

In corporate news, Comcast ( CMCSA ) shares tumbled 8.8% after a company executive said broadband subscription losses are expected to exceed 100,000 in Q4.

RealReal ( REAL ) shares surged 38% after Wells Fargo upgraded the luxury goods marketplace operator to overweight from equalweight and boosting the price target to $15 from $4.

Mondelez International ( MDLZ ) is exploring an acquisition of Hershey (HSY) that would create a company with combined sales of almost $50 billion, Bloomberg reported. Mondelez ( MDLZ ) shares fell 2.2%, and Hershey jumped 12%.

Macy's (M) shareholders Barington Capital and Thor Equities urged the department store chain to cut capital expenditures and consider alternatives for its Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury chains. Macy's shares rose 2.2%.
