Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Mixed in Afternoon Trading

01:48 PM EDT, 03/26/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks were mixed Wednesday afternoon with the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) rising 1.3% and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) falling 1.5%.

In sector news, President Donald Trump will announce auto industry tariffs at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Bloomberg reported, citing White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. Trump previously indicated he would share details on auto levies before his planned April 2 rollout of sweeping reciprocal tariffs against other countries.

In corporate news, Tesla (TSLA) buyers in Canada will no longer be eligible for electric vehicle rebates following an order by Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland, news outlets reported. Tesla shares fell 5.7%.

Dollar Tree ( DLTR ) agreed to sell its Family Dollar business to investment management firms Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management for $1.01 billion. Dollar Tree ( DLTR ) shares rose 3.4%.

GameStop ( GME ) shares jumped 14% after the video game retailer reported a surprise gain in fiscal Q4 earnings and announced plans to invest capital in cryptocurrency.
