Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Retreat in Late Afternoon Trading

03:45 PM EST, 01/22/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks fell late Wednesday afternoon with the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) shedding 0.3% and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) down 0.4%.

Redbook US same-store sales last week rose 4.5% from a year earlier after a 4% increase in the previous week.

In corporate news, Home Depot ( HD ) announced partnerships with Uber ( UBER ) and DoorDash's ( DASH ) delivery services, expanding one-hour delivery options for home improvement shoppers. Home Depot ( HD ) shares fell 1.9%, Uber ( UBER ) rose 0.3% and DoorDash ( DASH ) eased 0.1%.

Delta Air Lines ( DAL ) canceled about 400 flights before noon as airports in the Gulf Coast and Southeast regions face "rare, significant snowfall and ice." Delta shares dropped 0.6%.

Stellantis ( STLA ) plans to make new midsize pickups at its plant in Belvidere, Illinois, returning around 1,500 employees represented by the United Auto Workers union to the facility, Bloomberg reported. Stellantis ( STLA ) shares dropped 0.6%.

Netflix ( NFLX ) shares jumped 9.5%, a day after the company reported subscriber growth and earnings that topped estimates by analysts.
