Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Slipping in Afternoon Trading

01:53 PM EST, 03/06/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks were lower Thursday afternoon, with the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) down 0.3% and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) falling 2.7%.

In corporate news, Kroger's ( KR ) fiscal Q4 earnings came in ahead of market estimates but revenue missed forecasts. The supermarket chain issued a full-year bottom-line outlook below expectations. Its shares were rising 1.6%.

Macy's (M) fiscal Q4 results dropped annually on Thursday, while the department store operator outlined a weak outlook for the ongoing year. Its shares were down 0.8%.

Burlington Stores ( BURL ) shares jumped 9%. The off-price retailer reported higher-than-expected fiscal Q4 results and indicated that the ongoing economic uncertainty could benefit discount stores.
