03:20 PM EDT, 06/14/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Energy stocks were falling late Friday afternoon with the NYSE Energy Sector Index shedding 1.2% and the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) decreasing 0.9%.

The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector index slumped 3.1%, and the Dow Jones US Utilities index eased 0.3%.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil was fractionally down at $78.60 a barrel, and global benchmark Brent crude was fractionally lower at $82.74 a barrel. Henry Hub natural gas futures dropped 2.2% to $2.89 per 1 million BTU.

In corporate news, TotalEnergies (TTE), RWE, and Orsted are planning to participate in the upcoming German offshore wind auction starting Monday, Bloomberg reported Friday. TotalEnergies shares were falling 2.8%.

The BSE Sensex ended lower by nearly 225 points or by 0.6 percent to 37,665, while the NSE Nifty 50 ended lower by 74 points, or 0.65 percent to 11,356. Bank Nifty ended lower by 1.17 percent, while midcaps slipped by 0.65 percent. The BSE Sensex and the NSE nifty 50 opened sharply lower on Monday, tracking weakness in global markets and steep fall in the Indian rupee against the US dollar. The Sensex was trading at 37,590.72, down by over 278 points, or 0.74 percent in initial trade, while the NSE Nifty 50 traded lower by 79 points, or 0.69 percent, to 11,350.55. Traders will closely follow key macro-economic inflation data along with more first quarter earning results today and the direction of foreign fund flows. The BSE Sensex, after opening a shade higher at 38,050.07, quickly slipped below the 38,000-mark on Friday. It hit a low of 37,815.75 during the day, before finally finishing at 37,869.23, down 155.14 points. The NSE Nifty too lost 41.20 points to finish at 11,429.50.
