01:34 PM EST, 01/13/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Energy stocks were higher Monday afternoon, with the NYSE Energy Sector Index rising 1.3% and the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) climbing 2.2%.
The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector index posted a 1.5% increase, and the Dow Jones US Utilities index was down 1.2%.
Front-month West Texas Intermediate crude oil was rising 3.3% to $79.09 a barrel while the global benchmark Brent crude contract was advancing 1.8% to $81.20 a barrel. Henry Hub natural gas futures fell 3.1% to $3.87 per 1 million BTU.
In corporate news, Duke Energy ( DUK ) said Monday its board has named Harry Sideris as chief executive officer, effective April 1. Its shares were up 0.2%.
