03:26 PM EST, 01/23/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Energy stocks were higher late Friday afternoon, with the NYSE Energy Sector Index rising 1.5% and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) up 1%.
The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector Index was climbing 1.1%, and the Dow Jones US Utilities Index was shedding 0.6%.
Front-month West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 3% to $61.11 a barrel, and the global benchmark Brent crude contract advanced 2.9% to $65.94 a barrel. Henry Hub natural gas futures climbed 4.9% to $5.29 per 1 million BTU.
In corporate news, California Attorney General Rob Bonta said Friday the state is suing the Trump administration for taking over two state pipelines and allowing Sable Offshore ( SOC ) to restart pumping oil through them, according to media reports. Sable Offshore ( SOC ) shares fell past 14%.
