Sector Update: Energy Stocks Decline in Late Friday Afternoon Trading

03:40 PM EDT, 06/14/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Energy stocks were falling late Friday afternoon with the NYSE Energy Sector Index shedding 1.2% and the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) decreasing 0.8%.

The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector index slumped 3.1%, and the Dow Jones US Utilities index eased 0.3%.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil was fractionally down at $78.60 a barrel, and global benchmark Brent crude was fractionally lower at $82.74 a barrel. Henry Hub natural gas futures dropped 2.2% to $2.89 per 1 million BTU.

In corporate news, TotalEnergies (TTE), RWE and Orsted are planning to participate in the upcoming German offshore wind auction starting Monday, Bloomberg reported Friday. TotalEnergies shares were falling 2.4%.

New Fortress Energy ( NFE ) shares rose 0.9% after it said Friday it expects the first LNG from its unit in Altamira, Mexico, within the next 10 days, while the delivery of first cargo is expected in July.

BWX Technologies ( BWXT ) said its PanTeXas Deterrence venture was awarded a contract worth up to $30 billion from the US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration to manage and operate the Pantex plant in Texas. BWX shares rose 0.5%.

Phillips 66 (PSX) has agreed to sell its 25% non-operated common equity interest in Rockies Express Pipeline to a Tallgrass Energy subsidiary for about $1.28 billion. Phillips 66 shares were down 0.4%.
