Sector Update: Financial Stocks Decline Late Afternoon

03:51 PM EDT, 05/06/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Financial stocks fell in late Tuesday trading, with the NYSE Financial Index and the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) each shedding about 0.2%.

The Philadelphia Housing Index dropped 1.7%, and the Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLRE) declined 0.5%.

Bitcoin (BTC-USD) gained 0.3% to $95,114, and the yield for 10-year US Treasuries dropped 4.1 basis points to 4.308%.

In economic news, the first look at consumer confidence for May fell from April with the RealClearMarkets' monthly index falling to 47.9 from 49.1 on declines in two of its three components.

Redbook US same-store sales last week rose 6.9% from a year earlier after a 6.1% gain in the previous week.

In corporate news, Brookfield Asset Management ( BAM ) plans "to capitalize opportunistically on market dislocations," leveraging $120 billion in flexible capital "more valuable in times of uncertainty," top executives said in a letter to shareholders. Brookfield shares were rising 1.7%.

Coinbase (COIN) shares were down 0.8% after Monness, Crespi, Hardt downgraded the stock to neutral from buy.

JPMorgan Chase ( JPM ) and other US investment banks are steering clear of the Hong Kong IPO of China's Chery Automobile, Bloomberg reported. JPMorgan ( JPM ) was initially slated to be part of the offering but dropped off, allowing Chinese investment banks to sponsor the offering, the report said. JPMorgan ( JPM ) shares fell 0.9%.

Morgan Stanley ( MS ) said Monday the US Securities and Exchange Commission concluded its investigation into its cash sweep program for advisory accounts and doesn't intend to pursue enforcement action. The shares shed 0.8%.
