Sector Update: Financial Stocks Rise in Afternoon Trading

01:52 PM EDT, 05/13/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Financial stocks were advancing in Tuesday afternoon trading, with the NYSE Financial Index rising 0.5% and the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) ahead 0.8%.

The Philadelphia Housing Index was up 0.5%, while the Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLRE) was shedding 1.3%.

Bitcoin (BTC-USD) was increasing 1.1% to $103,909, and the yield for 10-year US Treasuries was up 3 basis points at 4.49%.

In economic news, the US seasonally adjusted consumer price index rebounded by 0.2% in April after a 0.1% decline in March, below expectations for a 0.3% increase in a survey compiled by Bloomberg. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, also rose by 0.2%, below the consensus estimate for 0.3% gain.

In corporate news, Coinbase (COIN) will replace Discover Financial Services (DFS) on the S&P 500 on May 19, S&P Dow Jones Indices said late Monday. Coinbase shares jumped 22%, and Discover was up 1.4%.

Robinhood (HOOD) shares surged past 9% after the company said it has agreed to acquire WonderFi for an all-cash purchase price of 250 million Canadian dollars ($179 million) on a fully diluted, in-the-money basis. Separately, Morgan Stanley raised Robinhood's earnings estimates for Q2, 2025 and 2026 after gains in equity and option transaction revenue.

Blackstone (BX) is in talks with investors to raise at least $5.6 billion for a fund that takes minority stakes in other private equity companies, Bloomberg reported. Blackstone added 0.7%.
